What is a misdemeanor?
Misdemeanors in the United States are considered to be lesser criminal acts, and are therefore punishable as such. Misdemeanors are federally defined as criminal actions that are punishable by up to one year in prison; acts that result in a penalty of over one year of incarceration are considered felonious. Misdemeanors are defined by the state, but the following crimes are commonly considered to be misdemeanors:
- Public intoxication
- Disorderly conduct
- Prostitution
- DUI
- Vandalism
- Trespassing
The punishment for misdemeanors may vary depending on the circumstances. Penalties may include up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to $1000.
