What is a felony?
In the United States, felonies are considered to be the most serious form of criminal action that one can carry out. Legally, felonies are defined as those crimes that are punishable by one year or more in prison. While felonious acts are defined on a state-to-state basis, common felony offenses include the following:
- Fraud
- Aggravated Assault
- Rape
- Robbery
- Kidnapping
- Arson
- Murder
Depending on the circumstances, felonies may be penalized by one year to life in prison. In states that support capital punishment, the most serious felonies may be punishable by death.
