Posted on June 16th, 2010 No Comments

Titusville police arrested a 43-year-old man on allegations of attempted kidnapping and driving under the influence on Monday.

According to the charges leveled against the man, he was responsible for trying to lure a 13-year-old girl into his Nissan pickup truck some time in the early evening. The girl refused, and shortly afterward contacted a nearby adult. Police were informed not long after the incident took place at 7:10 p.m., and were able to patrol the area within fifteen minutes. The suspect was apprehended only two block from the site of the incident.

Once pulled over, the man offered no resistance to officers, and was identified as a 43-year-old Titusville man who had previously been charged with cruelty to a child in 2000. Authorities found lengths of rope and knives stored in the man’s truck.

Police commended the girl for immediate response to the situation and her clear thinking.

$3M thief gets 10 years in prison

Posted on May 28th, 2010 No Comments

The ex-chief executive officer of Palm Beach Medical Group was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after being convicted of theft.

The sentencing was passed Monday. Her former co-workers were asking that she be jailed for the maximum 30 years, while the prosecution requested a 20-year jail stay. The defense acknowledged her guilt, and asked that she would be under house arrest instead of prison. The judge passed his sentence of 10 years, adding the difficulty of sentencing someone with such a storied history of mental instability.

The ex-CEO’s theft was approximately $3 million, far beyond the $100,000 categorical outline of grand theft.

During the proceedings, the defense pressed her mental problems as the rationale for her lavish lifestyle and overindulgence in luxury. They cited, especially, her teen marriage to a child molester who allegedly tortured her by locking her into rooms for months. Doctors had previously diagnosed her with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and major depression. She had a long history of suicide attempts, and many were worried that this jail sentence would exacerbate those feelings.

Gas stations fighting credit card theft

Posted on May 26th, 2010 No Comments

West Palm Beach gas stations will be seeing new security improvements installed to cut back on credit card theft.

With increased identity and credit card theft, credit card companies have pressed gas station owners to purchase and install anti-skimmer devices. The new technology stops criminals from installing their own devices, which read credit card information whenever a customer swipes their card into the pump station.

This increase in security comes at a price, however. According to gas station owners, the expanded precautions could cost around $4,000 for each pump. The penalty for noncompliance does not allow for much arguing, as credit card companies have threatened to pull their services altogether if gas stations do not upgrade their pumps. Considering that the large majority of purchases at pumps are made with credit cards, there is little gas station owners can do to argue with the credit card companies.

The additions are expected to be completed by June 30th, although Exxon and Mobile stores have been given a December extension due to a lack of equipment.

Cold case defendants taken into custody

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

Two men have been charged with the cold case murder of a 26 year-old Broward County man which originally occurred in 2006.

The body was found at approximately 5 a.m. on June 10, 2006, located near Forest Hill High School in the 800 block of Lytle Street. Above him was written in spray paint, “Mala Suerte,” or “Bad Luck” in Spanish. According to the police report, the body had been shot several times, and later burnt. Investigators in the case believe that the motive for the murder was tied to a drug transaction. After killing the man, the suspects dumped his body in West Palm Beach and attempted to burn away any chance of identifying the victim.

One of the men arrested was a 32 year-old Miami-Dade man. The other was already in police custody, found in a Miami federal prison for armed robbery in an unrelated case. A third man, 30 years of age, is currently hiding in a foreign country, say authorities, avoiding possible extradition.

The case has been handled by five different law enforcement groups.

Man on trial for sword-related murder

Posted on May 19th, 2010 No Comments

As the trial of a Stuart man charged with an April 21, 2008 murder has begun, the defense, offering another case of self-defense, has opted out of an introductory remark.

The man, charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of adulterating food or drink, is currently standing trial after his girlfriend’s father-in-law went missing. He was later found dead with multiple stab wounds to the chest, back, and throat in the county landfill. Authorities have additionally charged both the man and girlfriend of trying to poison the victim by using heavy doses of sleep aids in tequila and milk bottles.

A search of the defendant’s computer revealed a search history of several types of poisons, including poisonous plants. Prosecutors also offered footage of the defendant and his girlfriend purchasing non-prescription sleep aids at a Stuart Wal-Mart.

The alleged murder weapons were found under the defendant’s bed, as prosecutors introduced two swords as evidence.

The defendant’s girlfriend accepted a no-contest plea to reduce her charges to second-degree murder. Her sentencing is forthcoming.
