A 63-year old Delray Beach doctor recently plead guilty to attempted drug trafficking. According to the charges, the doctor used dead patients’ names to write prescriptions for oxycodone, which he would later pick up himself.
At a plea conference, the doctor admitted that he had become addicted to the drug after having surgery for a serious back injury. According to the plea deal, the doctor will serve 5 years of drug offender probation with the second degree felony. Because the doctor was not adjudicated guilty, he will not be considered a felon.
Investigators in the doctor’s case said that he would have to make up excuses to pick up the prescriptions for the patients. Also, the doctor was not licensed to dispense drugs in Florida. However, in just three months, the doctor was able to order 4,000 oxycodone pills.
