A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision says that juveniles cannot be sentenced to life for juvenile crime convictions other than murder — even if the juvenile is charged as an adult. For this reason, a West Palm Beach man was was re-sentenced for an assault crime he committed as a 16-year old.
The man, two other juveniles, and an adult were convicted of the rape of a 35-year old woman at a housing project in West Palm Beach in 2007. A 35-year old woman was said to have been sexually assaulted and her 12-year old son tortured by a group of boys.
The man was sentenced to life for the crime despite being a juvenile. Last Wednesday, his sentence was reduced to 60 years.
