As the trial of a Stuart man charged with an April 21, 2008 murder has begun, the defense, offering another case of self-defense, has opted out of an introductory remark.

The man, charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of adulterating food or drink, is currently standing trial after his girlfriend’s father-in-law went missing. He was later found dead with multiple stab wounds to the chest, back, and throat in the county landfill. Authorities have additionally charged both the man and girlfriend of trying to poison the victim by using heavy doses of sleep aids in tequila and milk bottles.

A search of the defendant’s computer revealed a search history of several types of poisons, including poisonous plants. Prosecutors also offered footage of the defendant and his girlfriend purchasing non-prescription sleep aids at a Stuart Wal-Mart.

The alleged murder weapons were found under the defendant’s bed, as prosecutors introduced two swords as evidence.

The defendant’s girlfriend accepted a no-contest plea to reduce her charges to second-degree murder. Her sentencing is forthcoming.
