Florida Drug Schedule
Most states, including Florida, organize controlled substances by a schedule system so that citizens and law enforcement officers are aware of the dangers of different chemicals. The five-tiered schedule distinguishes between different drugs, the likelihood of abuse, and accepted medical uses for a given drug. The presence of a chemical on this list does not indicate that it is necessarily illegal, but that there are restrictions on its use and distribution in a state.
If you have been charged with possessing, distributing or using controlled substances illegally, the consequences can be severe. What Is The Controlled Substance Schedule?
There are five levels of controlled substances in the state of Florida. Schedule I substances are the most highly controlled and are illegal if improperly used or distributed. Schedule V substances are the least likely substances to be abused and do have commonly accepted medical use. Each schedule is strictly defined as follows.
- Schedule I substances are highly likely to be abused and have no accepted medical use. This includes products like LSD and peyote.
- Schedule II substances also have a high potential to be abused if used outside of a controlled medical environment. This includes raw opium and codeine.
- Schedule III substances have less potential for abuse than the previous levels but and do have some accepted medical uses. These substances can still result in dependence.
- Schedule IV substances can still lead to physical dependence, but are less likely to be abused than the above categories. They have common medical use in general.
- Schedule V substances can lead to less abuse relative to schedule IV, but are still controlled in their distribution.
These substances are controlled for the protection of Florida’s citizens. Violations of these regulations are taken seriously by law enforcement.
