Courtroom Etiquette

When you have to appear in court, a judge’s or jury’s first impression of you is very important. The way you act, dress, and carry yourself can all leave impressions on those who will be making serious decisions about your future, and as such, it is important for you to do everything you can to appear mature and respectful.

If you or a loved one has to appear in court, it is important for you to have as much information as possible about how you should behave. Contact the West Palm Beach criminal attorneys of Eric N. Klein & Associates, P.A., at 561-353-2800 for more information.

Tips for Proper Courtroom Behavior

It is important to use common sense when appearing in court and to always be at least 15 minutes early for your appearance. To make the best possible impression, be sure to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Dress well. Men should wear a suit and tie, or a nice collared shirt tucked in with slacks. Women should wear a nice conservative dress or suit. Do not overdress or wear anything too revealing.
  • Practice good hygiene by brushing your teeth, taking a shower, grooming your hair and facial hair, and clipping your fingernails
  • Turn off or silence cell phones
  • Stand up for the judge and do not sit before the judge sits
  • Do not speak unless asked to speak
  • Address lawyers as “sir” and “ma’am” and always call the judge “your honor”
